About Us

Choice. That’s what everyone wants, whether it’s what to eat for lunch, which clothes to wear, or how to live your life. It also applies to eyewear, because glasses are a necessary accessory for seeing well and doing what you love. It’s even better if your choice is made right here in the U.S.A.

Enter FrameofChoice.com. Once only a military term, now it’s the website destination for eyewear that goes wherever you go.

You may know that term if you have a military background, and you’d also know that Department of Defense eyewear—along with clothing and supplies—are all standard-issue. They’re created for durability and uniformity, not fashion or lifestyle-specific needs. That’s where FrameofChoice.com comes in.

We started by supplying soldiers with accessories for their standard-issue eyewear, including our Sunclips, to protect their eyes in areas like Iraq and Afghanistan, where the sun glare is brutal. Soon we were supplying standard-issue plus new eyewear styles by request for military personnel to wear off-duty—styles that provided more attractive choices than the infamous “BCGs” (aka “birth-control glasses")!

Now we’re excited to offer an ever-growing selection of eyewear styles and lens options to meet the lifestyles of everyone who needs high-quality eyewear at a great price. All from one website that makes it fun, fast and easy to buy U.S.-made eyewear that fits your personal functional—or fashionable—adventure.

As you roam through our site, please let us know how you like frameofchoice.com along with any feedback you have for us. We want to hear from you!

Customer Testimonials

Here's what our customers are saying about FrameofChoice.com

I have had a wonderful experience at FOC. I spoke to Coreen on several occasions and she was very helpful in answering my questions. And when I got the glasses and they didn’t fit because I should have chosen the larger size, Coreen sent me the postage in an email and I sent back the glasses that day.
My glasses fit well, look good, don’t fall off and stand up to my 2 year old occasionally throwing them on the floor.
Overall, I had an excellent experience with FOC.
-- Lane L.
"Extremely happy with the purchase. Packaging was great. Price great. Quality great. I'll keep coming back and sing your praises to others."
-- Dustin.

"I only recently became aware of FOC when I was issued a pair of Beret Matt Gold eyeglasses with prescription lenses by the Veterans Administration. The frame and lenses were just about all I needed with one small exception. The prescription includes Photochromic which are great! However, I soon discovered that they don’t work very well or at all when behind UV treated windows, more specifically when inside a car. That led me to start looking for clip on sunglasses. I became frustrated looking for a generic solution so I simply Googled “Beret Matt Gold” and was directed to FOC where I found the perfect match."
-- Bob.

"I have been so ecstatic with my new lenses (for Glass) that I would like to have the GOLD lenses in a standard frame. I play competitive pool and the lack of distortion in these lenses is perfect for working the angles on a pool table. It's against regulations to use Glass during any type of match play. Thanks!"
-- John.

"I purchased a pair of glasses with lenses and a clip on. The process was fairly easy and the delivery was speedy. I have no problems with the prescription. Thank you."
-- Linda.

"It has been a pleasure conducting business with Frame of choice. My initial contact was with Coreen. She provided a quick and courteous response to my inquiry and guided me in the proper direction. Thereafter the website was easy to navigate and place my order. The shipping process was timely and reliable. Finally the product was of good quality as well. Thanks for the great all around experience."
-- Jeff.

"I get my prescription eyeglasses through the VA. I inquired about sunglasses and was referred to ''Frame of Choice''. I could not be more pleased with the service and price. Your selection of frames is truly outstanding. Coreen Henning is an asset to your company. She stepped me through the ordering process and made me feel at ease. I will have no problem recommending your company to anyone who needs glasses. The turn around was surprising."
-- Robert S.

"I was very pleased with my shopping experience at frameofchoice.com. I purchased prescription eyeglasses that arrived promptly and fit nicely. I will be a return customer."
-- Jesse W.

"I absolutely love my new glasses! I just received them today....Thank you very much. I will definitely be purchasing my glasses from this company for as long as I can."
-- Chase H.

"THRILLED WITH YOUR SERVICE!!! Super quick delivery, extremely knowledgeable, helpful and polite staff. Have already recommended you to others. Thanks so much!"
-- Teresa T.

"I wanted to thank you (and particularly Coreen) for helping me order my new glasses. She was very courteous and made the process effortless on my part. The folks at the VA had referred me to their supplier who then referred me to you. I am very pleased with the very competitive prices you offer and am equally pleased with the quality of the glasses. The cleaning fluid, glasses case, cleaning cloth, and glasses holder you sent were a nice touch. I'll be sure to call you again when I need to replace my glasses."
-- Jack W.

"I would like to say first, I am very happy with my purchase from Frame of Choice!

I had been looking at other retailers, and even utilized Warby Parker's free try-at-home service. Frankly their styles and quality weren't what I was looking for. Then I found your web-site through Troop Swap. I hemmed and hawed for about a week before deciding on the purchase.

I have already forwarded positive feedback to U.S. Veteran co-workers and friends I know."

-- Joel B.

"You guys are freaking AWESOME! Came home for lunch and found my new glasses….I expected to at least have to go get them adjusted for fit, but they fit like I picked them up off my night table, only better….I have been having such trouble with glasses lately and I can't wear [contact] lenses….when you have to wear glasses, how they look can make a HUGE difference in how you feel. Thank you, thank you, thank you AGAIN!"

"One month later…"

"My overall experience with FrameofChoice was absolutely positive. I've spent today thinking about what I would change and very frankly, I can't think of anything. I was very nervous about getting the correct script when I ordered, especially with my bifocals, but you guys were right on top of it. I like my glasses very much and I really appreciate all your help."

-- DLC

"I am writing to let you know how happy we are with the eyeglasses we purchased from your military program....My son required a pair of glasses in a hurry prior to attending Airborne school, and you guys came through in record time. He received the glasses in a day, and they were packaged very nicely. He appreciated the case, strap and lens cleaner....I want to thank you for your superior service! He wore his glasses through his school training and all his jumps, and they were great. Thanks again and good luck!"
-- Karen B.

"My experience with Frame of Choice was very positive. The order process was simple and straightforward and my glasses shipped the day after I purchased them, very efficient. At first there was an issue with my prescription information not being received with my order. Frame of Choice called me the same day I placed the order to get my prescription. I really appreciated their efficiency and customer service.

The sizes are true to form and the pictures are accurate representations of the glasses. All together, a great experience and the price couldn't be beat.

Thank you!"

-- A. Crosby

"I ordered a pair of Rochester R-5A glasses a week ago and enjoyed the service very much. The service was good, I input my prescription and they had a wide variety of frame sizes.

They arrived in short order, along with a case, lenses cleaning fluid, and even a strap for the frames. I was not expecting that last item and was pleasantly surprised.

I would recommend to all my friends looking for good quality glasses."

-- L. Tran

"Thank you for your outstanding customer service. I'll pass this information to my fellow active/retired military co-workers."
-- B. Gibson

Frame Fitting Guide

How do I choose the correct frames?
With frames available in all shapes, sizes and colors, choosing the right frames can be a little confusing. But our tips here can help you decide which frames will fit and look best on you, based on your face shape. Frames should enhance the shape and features of your face. By wearing a contrasting frame shape, your glasses will complement the shape of your face. Once you determine the shape of your face and the size of your frames, the rest is easy.

Frame size:
To determine the size of your frames, look inside your current glasses and you’ll find numbers on the bridge or earpiece. You can also visit your optician or local optical store to determine these measurements.

What do the numbers on my frames mean?
Example: 57-20-135
The first number, 57, is the lens diameter in millimeters (mm).
The second number, 20, is the width of the nose bridge in mm.
The third number, 135, is the earpiece length in mm.

Note: Recommended lens height to accommodate a bifocal or multifocal lens should be a minimum of 28mm to accommodate.
There’s an acceptable deviation of 2mm in these measurements, allowing you to choose new frames that aren’t identical to your current pair.

What is my pupillary distance (PD)?
Your PD is the distance from the center of the pupil (black spot) in one eye to the center of the pupil in your other eye. Your PD measurement improves the positioning of your lenses within the eyeglass frame. Be sure you ask for your PD measurement when you have your eyes examined and have it added to your prescription.

How to measure your own PD (pupillary distance)

Pupillary Distance is the distance between the center of each pupil when you look straight ahead, measured in millimeters (mm). Eye doctors and optometrists can measure your PD in two ways: single PD, when you get just one measurement; or dual values, which are two measurements that represent the distance from the center of your nose to the center of each pupil.

Most adults have a single PD between 54 and 74mm.

A single PD measurement, taken correctly by a professional is preferred, however your prescription may not include that information. We have provided instructions and a measurement tool for you to measure your pupillary distance. You can measure it in the mirror, but having a friend help you is preferred.

Click here to download our PD Measurement Instructions to measure yours with the help of a friend.

How do I choose frames to suit the shape of my face?

This guide is for general purposes only and you should pick your eyewear based upon your individual taste. However most people generally fall into one of the following categories.

Oval Face shape:
Since the shape of your face is well-balanced, you can wear most frame styles.
Any frame shape typically works with an oval face shape.

Round face shape:
A soft angular or rectangle shape frame can make your face appear longer and thinner.
Frame suggestions: Wider frames in an angular, rectangular or square design

Square face shape:
You can reduce the sharp angles of a square face by choosing soft, curvy frames such as ovals or cat-eyes.
Frame suggestions: Oval, round or cat-eyes

Long face shape:
You can widen and shorten the appearance of an oblong face by wearing frames that don’t extend beyond the widest part of your face.
Frame suggestions: Round or square

Heart face shape:
Choose a frame that’s slender, rounded or squared, but avoid a frame with more width at the top.
Frame suggestions: Slender, rounded or squared

What are the best lenses for me?

This depends on your prescription. Generally, you’ll want your lenses to be thin and lightweight for comfort, and thin lenses are always more cosmetically appealing.
Free Form Digital Lenses

You may have heard about Digital HD (high-definition) Lenses, also known as “Free Form” lenses. These lenses are becoming more popular among people who need progressive lenses—and there are very good reasons why more people are choosing Digital HD lenses for their progressives.

For instance, you may want to consider Digital HD Lenses if you:

  • · Want more peripheral vision with your progressive lenses
  • · Need to turn your head to see beside you, or to see the mirrors in your car
  • · Would like a bigger reading area with your progressive lenses

In all of these cases, the design of your progressive lenses has a definite effect on your vision. Over the years, there have been plenty of advances in optical technology. Today’s digitally designed and manufactured lenses give unprecedented visual quality. The manufacturing process directly places the lens design on the back surface of the lens. This means the design of Digital HD lenses can be personalized to your precise fitting and prescription requirements.

The end results: Digital HD Lenses offer less peripheral distortion in the distance part of the lens. At the same time, the visual area in the intermediate and near portions of each lens improves. These advantages combine to deliver a 20-40% wider viewing area across the all visual fields of your progressive lenses.

At FrameofChoice.com, we manufacture Digital HD Lenses to a much higher degree of precision than conventional lenses. Our Digital HD lenses are accurate to one one hundredth of a diopter in power, while conventional lenses are accurate to only one eighth of a diopter.

We’re committed to providing a wide range of lenses to fit the lifestyle needs of all our customers. So if you play sports, spend lots of time outdoors or behind the wheel, or have a job that requires hours of reading or close work—or you just want to see everything at its clearest and sharpest—our Digital HD Lenses are the best choice for your next pair of progressive eyeglasses.

If you have any questions about our Digital HD Lenses, please call us toll-free at 800-227-6342, between 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM EST.

Adjustable Nose Pad or Rocking Pads: Nose pads attached to eyeglasses that can be custom adjusted to the angles of your nose for a perfect fit.

Amblyopia: (Also known as lazy eye.) A condition where a person’s vision cannot be corrected to 20/20 even with the aid of eyeglasses or contact lenses. This condition affects about two percent of children. With early diagnosis and treatment, one can avoid permanent vision loss.

Anti-Reflective Coating (A/R): A coating applied to a lens which reduces reflections off the lens and allows more light to pass through to the eye.

Astigmatism: An optical defect in which refractive power is not uniform in all directions. Light rays entering the eye are bent unequally, which prevent the formation of a sharp image focus on the retina. A large, uncorrected astigmatism can often result in blurred vision and headaches.

Bayonet Temple: This style temple is popular in aviator style eyeglasses and is straight. A bayonet temple does not bend behind the ear.

Bifocals: Eyeglasses that incorporate two different powers in each lens, usually for near and distance corrections.

Binocular vision: Blending of the separate images seen by each eye into one composite image.

Bridge Size: This is the width between the eyeglass lenses, or the width of your nose bridge where the eyeglasses will rest.

-- C --

Cataract: Opacity or cloudiness of the crystalline lens, which may prevent a clear image from forming on the retina. May be present at birth or caused by trauma, disease or aging. Surgical removal of the lens may be necessary if visual loss becomes significant. An intraocular lens, contact lens or special (aphakic) eyeglasses can replace the lost optical power in the eye.

Comfort Cable Temple: A straight temple with a flexible cable attached to the end that wraps around your ear to hold eyeglasses securely in place.

Computer Vision Syndrome: Vision related problems that develop from prolonged computer use.

Conjunctivitis: An inflammation or infection of the thin transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid that covers the white part of the eye (the conjunctiva).

-- D --

DBL or Distance Between Lenses: The horizontal distance between the two lenses in an eyeglass frame. DBL is measured across the bridge of the frame, usually in millimeters.

Diabetic Retinopathy: A condition, occurring in patients with diabetes, which causes progressive damage to the retina, which is the light sensitive lining at the back of the eye.

Digital Lens or Digital Free Form Lens: Also known as a free form progressive, this lens has a progressive design that is digitally surfaced on the back of the lens, as opposed to traditional progressives that are surfaced on the front of the lens. The advantage to free form lenses is that they eliminate front surface distortion and significantly expand the visual field of the wearer.

Diplopia, double vision: Perception of two images from one object. The images may be horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

HD or High Definition Lens: A digitally surfaced and highly customizable lens, that is surfaced using digital technology and design. The patients prescription and frame fitting details are input to custom surface a lens to exact specifications, also referred to as free form lenses.

High Index Lens: A lens with a higher index typcially 1.60 to 1.74 providing a thinner and lighter lens where a patient has a stronger prescription which would normally result in a thicker lens.

Hyperopia, farsightedness: A focusing defect in which the eye is underpowered. This means that light rays coming from a distant object strike the retina before coming to a sharp focus, which creates blurry vision. It can be corrected with additional optical power supplied by a plus lens (eyeglass or contact) or by excessive use of the eye’s own focusing ability (accommodation).

-- L --

“Lazy eye: See amblyopia.

Legal blindness: Best-corrected visual acuity of 20/200 or less, or reduction in visual field to 20¡ or less, in the better seeing eye.

Low vision: Vision of less than 20/200.

-- M --

Macular Degeneration: Eye disease that affects the macula, causing loss of central vision.

Myopia, commonly called nearsightedness: This is a focusing defect in which the eye is overpowered, because light rays coming from a distant object focus in front of the retina. The condition requires a minus lens correction to “weaken” the eye optically and allow clear distance vision.

Monocular: Pertaining or having related to one eye.

-- N --

Nearsightedness: See myopia.

Nose Pad: The small pieces below the bridge on eyeglasses that rests on the wearer's nose. Nose pads can either be adjustable or rigid depending on the frame style.

Nystagmus: A vision condition where the eyes make repeated and uncontrolled movements, often resulting in reduced vision.

How to measure your PD

Download our PD Measurement Instructions to measure yours with the help of a friend.

      Photochromic Lenses

Photochromic lenses are clear lenses that darken when exposed to UV rays from the sun. Simply put, when you head outside, these lenses turn into sunglasses. Once you come out of the sun, they turn clear again.

Photochromic lenses are made with a UV light-sensitive microcystalline silver halide product, usually silver chloride, which is integrated into the surface of each lens. This active ingredient is what causes the lens to darken when exposed to the sun, but then appear transparent under artificial light.

Based on how much outdoor light is available, these lenses will also darken or lighten accordingly, in one to two minutes . There are many brands and styles of photochromic lenses available to provide UV sun protection for your eyes.

At FrameofChoice.com, we’re pleased to offer photochromic lenses as an option for your prescription sunglasses. Our photochromic options are available as Transitions VITM, or in a generic version if you’re more budget-minded. Our current line of photochromic lenses will not darken behind glass, such as while driving your car. But watch this site for updates—we may offer this option in the future.

      Polarized lenses

Even with sunglasses on, sun glare can change or distort true color, making things harder to see.  Traditional sunglasses can help reduce glare, but you may lose detail in your surroundings because your non-polarized lenses are often dyed or tinted.

Polarized lenses will block out glare and won't dim your field of vision.

How do polarized lenses work?  Light rays vibrate in many directions.  As light passes through a polarized lens, the polarized film will filter out any of the light that is not travelling in the same direction as the polarization, thus eliminating glare - much the way a venetian blind will channel light.

      About our Premium Polarized Lenses:

Each premium polarized color tint has benefits beyond just appearance.  Here is a guide to help you choose the best premium polarized lens color for your Sunclip based on your activities:

      Gray 3 PolarizedPremium Gray:

Ideal for bright sunny days and exposure to heavy glare.  Best uses for premium gray include driving, deep-water fishing, boating and every day use.  This gray tint reduces the maximum amount of visible light and allows for true color recognition.

      G-15 Gray/GreenG-15 (Gray/Green):

Gray-green premium polarized lenses are similar in sensitivity to the human eye.  This create a result of natural vision and true colors that are easy on the eyes.  The gray-green premium lens reduces light transmission and is recommended for bright, sunny days.

      Premium Brown:

Premium polarized brown lenses provide excellent contrast and improve visual acuity and depth perception.  This brown lens reduces blue light and is good for highly sunny and varying conditions.  Recommended for driving, golf and shallow water fishing.

      Copper:

Premium polarized lenses with copper tint maximize contrast - making items brighter.  Copper polarized lenses are ideal in situations where good visual acuity is crucial.  Recommended for fishing, golfing and driving in varying conditions.

      Blue:

Premium polarized blue lenses are great for partly cloudy to sunny conditions.  Good for tennis and shooting at green targets, these lenses let the maximum amount of blue light.

      Violet:

Purple premium polarized lenses dampen certain backgrounds and increase contrasts.  This tint is often used by shooters in average or bright conditions.  These lenses are also recommended for use in cross country skiing, golfing or snowmobiling.

      Rose:

Vibrant rose colored premium polarized lenses increase contrast.  This tint color is great for early morning or late evening fishing.  Rose tinted lenses are often used by skiers, hunters and target shooters in bright sunny conditions.

      Yellow:

Yellow premium polarized lenses provide the most light transmission of any polarized lens.  Yellow lenses increase contrast and filters out blue light.  Typically used in low light conditions, yellow lenses are recommended for shooters, hunters and skiers.

      Green:

Green premium polarized lenses maintain a true color balance, and are a great choice for varying light conditions.  They are recommended for driving, tennis, golf, but can serve as an all-purpose lens.

      Amber:

Amber polarized lenses provide the best performance in outdoor lighting conditions.  Amber lenses will protect your eyes from hazardous light and fatigue, will reduce glare and will present your surroundings in vivid color and contrast.
